Fertility awareness is being aware of the changes in your body that let you know
when you are ovulating and likely to conceive. Being aware of these changes can help you in planning to
become pregnant or in avoiding pregnancy. Fertility awareness can include being aware of the usual length
of your monthly cycles, which are calculated from the first day of one period until the first day of the next period.
Changes in cervical mucus and changes in the position of the cervix can also be evaluated. Basal body temperature can
be measured each morning before arising as small changes in body temperature can indicate ovulation. When
a woman is trying to become pregnant and knows when she is ovulating she can time intercourse to make pregnancy more likely.
When she is trying to avoid pregnancy she can avoid intercourse during her fertile times or use a barrier method to
avoid pregnancy. The midwives at Vivante can help you in learning to chart your cycles and in interpretting your
charts.
